About Namma Cafe

namma-cafe

Spread under a jackfruit and a mango tree are rattan tables and chairs with bright blue upholstery. Beautiful handcrafted stone urulis adorn the floors with fragrant jasmine flowers and the decor of this beautiful outdoor cafe is an eclectic mix of old and new, odds and ends from here and there. Namma Cafe, the small outdoor space transformed into a coffee shop opened its doors last evening to the charm of actor Ganesh Venkataraman and the local Chennai band The F16s.

‘Let’s meet for coffee!’ is such a commonly heard phrase today… but being in a city with as old a coffee tradition as Madras, shouldn’t we all be meeting for some good old filter coffee? In South India, the beverage has its own special place in the annals of coffee drinking. Namma Cafe is the first of its kind – a South Indian cafe.

A perfect hangout, Namma Cafe is a rich fusion of modernity and yesteryear tradition. Cocooned in a unique outdoor ambience (with wifi), Namma Cafe is a perfect catch-up spot. Namma Cafe revisits our roots, keeping tradition alive, reviving heritage, and recreating heirloom recipes. It’s a space for meetings, arattai, and plain gupshup.

With coffee as good as your grandmother’s special brew, with decoction fresh from the filter, molaga bajji, masala vadai, kuzhipaniyaram and kozhakattais on the platter, it is but fitting that Namma Cafe is in Mylapore, the traditional and cultural hub of Chennai, amid kutcheris, kovils and kalacharam – concerts, temples and tradition. Do we need say more?

While most of Chennai beckons you with the urban cuisines of the world, Namma Cafe remains staunchly rooted in the traditional South Indian fare, reminiscent of your home and replete with comfort food the way only Paati makes it.

For travellers visiting Chennai, Namma Cafe is the perfect introduction to the city’s twin culture of east and west. This is a city that regularly refuses to be defined, surprising you at every turn with yet another aspect of its versatile personality. Namma Cafe, though, embodies all that this city stands for.

Please visit us at the coffee shop. It is open from 11:00 AM to 06:00 PM every day.
